Were you there?
I needed to revisit this. When I wrote it for our liturgies last year I didn’t realize it would stick with me. Cling to me like inescapable heat; you sweat, try to get cool, but it is unforgiving. I needed to write these words again, because I was there. And you were too. Over and over again we are witnessing the Crucifixion. Over and over again we are witnessing death by the state. We tremble. In fear and in rage. We tremble.
I wish I had more words but I will just leave you with the lyrics...
Were you there when they crucified my lord?
Were you there when they crucified my lord?
Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble.
Tremble
Tremble
Were you there when they crucified my lord?
Were you there when they shot him 20 times?
Were you there when they shot him 20 times?
Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble
Tremble
Tremble
Were you there when they shot him 20 times?
Did you hear when he said he could not breathe?
Did you hear when he said he could not breathe?
Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble
Tremble
Tremble
Did you hear when he said he could not breathe?
Were you there when they deported her away?
Were you there when they deported her away?
Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble
Tremble
Tremble
Were you there when they deported her away?
