Why is she so dope? A space to honor women of color
In the last few years, you may have seen memes or posts with phrases like, “behind every powerful woman is a team of powerful women,” or “women uplift women.” These statements represent a powerful truth: magic happens when women uplift women. Whether it’s in their careers, families, or fashion, nothing is more encouraging then to hear that “I see you, sis!” from another powerful woman. In my own development as a scholar and leader, female colleagues and friends have always been by my side encouraging me, supporting me, and at times calling me out for not stepping into my greatness. It was through these experiences that I learned the importance of supporting other women, and so I wanted to be sure to always pay it forward. This is especially true for women of color, who so often have to navigate spaces filled with sexism, racism, and a complete disregard for intersectionality. Couple those realites with the fact that WOC are still paid less, and promoted less than their counterparts and you will realize why the achievements and brilliance of WOC should be celebrated.
The idea began as a joking conversation, a comment on a Facebook post; “why is she so dope?” The evidence is clear, but the question is still important. To ask “why is she so dope?” is to question the ever expansive dopeness that is evident in each accomplishment, award, post, thought, and idea. We know she’s dope, we just have to ask the question as a way to signify that we are still being brought into the full reality of that dopeness.
“Why is she so dope?” is a space dedicated to women of color who are doing amazing things in the world and integrating religion and/or spirituality in their work. Each week we will feature one amazing woman; her work, what inspires her, and so much more. The role of religion and spirituality (no matter what religion, tradition, or expression) plays a critical role in many lives, and you will be surprised how many women of color incorporate it into their work. I focus on these women not to limit who is dope, but to show that these women are constantly connected to something bigger than themselves, and that connection fuels their dopeness. From pastors, scholars, and artists to medical professionals, CEOs, and those in tech and media, each of these women have incredible wisdom to offer us. Let’s celebrate them!
